Georgetown seeks federal grants for local road projects

The following projects will be submitted for review:

• $25 million-$28 million for full construction of FM 971
• $10 million-$13 million for full design of Hwy. 29 East
• $20 million-$25 million for construction of the Austin Avenue and Downtown Square conversion
• $11 million-$13 million for construction of Spur 26

The timeline

Georgetown will finalize the grant requests and bring them to City Council for approval in January. The CAMPO deadline is Jan. 23.

Cities should hear back about the final award decision in mid-to-late summer, Woolery said.

Some context

CAMPO is a federal organization that coordinates with local governments for their regional transportation networks. It covers six counties—Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson.

CAMPO has about $330 million in STBG grant funding available over the next five years, Woolery said. The application pool is competitive due to available funding and the number of projects requesting grants, he said.

“There’s not a lot of federal transportation funding that’s been available in the region; most of it that we’ve had the past several years have gone into downtown Austin for the I-35 project,” Woolery said.
