City of Georgetown marks day for local non-profit

Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder declared Sept. 20 Assistance League of Georgetown Area Day, in celebration of the Assistant League’s 20th anniversary and continuous service to the areas of Georgetown, Jarrell and Florence, according to a release from the organization.

Mayor Schroeder recognized the organization at a presentation ceremony given at the Georgetown Library.

“Assistance League of Georgetown Area is a great example of what makes Georgetown so special," Mayor Schroeder said of the organization in the release. “They represent an entrepreneurial spirit, resilience in tough times, and—most important—a dedication to improving the lives of both young and old. Georgetown is a much better place because of their sustained and expanding contributions to the community.”

Assistance League of Georgetown Area is a non-profit organization that collects donations, such as home furnishings and clothing, and re-sells them at its thrift shop in the Republic Square shopping center, where all proceeds go to benefit its community-oriented philanthropic programs.

The all-volunteer-based organization has had 150 volunteers donate close to 18,000 hours of their time in the past year. The Assistance League offers clothing and supplies to area students, assistance for teachers, elder care and more.

“Through both our thrift shop and philanthropies, we are able to positively touch the lives of thousands of people in the greater Georgetown area each year,” said Suzan Brown, Assistance League of Georgetown Area president. “It’s an honor to be recognized in this way by the city and our mayor. We are proud of our 20-year history and look forward to growing with the great community of Georgetown in the years ahead.”
