Representatives with the city of Georgetown and the Central Texas YMCA celebrated the start of a project that will construct a 55,000-square-foot recreation facility at a groundbreaking ceremony May 29.
About the project
The Sport Clips Family YMCA will be the first full-service YMCA in the city, and will cost $36 million. With construction set to officially begin next month, the project will be led by contractor Chasco, and will take about 18 months to complete.
The new facility will provide recreation and community activities and events for Georgetown residents. Visitors can expect youth, family, health and senior wellness programs, according to a YMCA news release.
Voters approved $10 million in bond funding for the project in November 2023. The remaining cost will be funded by the YMCA of Central Texas, the Georgetown YMCA Founders Group, Sport Clips and local fundraising efforts.

"This is just a huge stake in the ground for what [the YMCA is] going to be doing for generations in the future, and that is going to make our community better," City Manager David Morgan said at the ceremony.
Members of the local YMCA chapter also shared their excitement for the project. Central Texas YMCA Chair Cary Rab said the facility has been a longtime in the making.
“This association started with a little bitty YMCA in Round Rock, Texas,” Rab said. “Then we turned to Williamson County and now we're the Central Texas YMCA. This organization continues to evolve and to grow. The mission continues to increase and probably in about 18 months we're going to look out here and see the Sport Clips family YMCA.”
The background
The YMCA of Central Texas and the city of Georgetown began collaborating to deliver a new YMCA facility in February 2022, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
While the Georgetown Family YMCA has provided after school childcare at Georgetown elementary schools, as well as youth programs and summer day camps at its storefront, the new building will be the city’s first fully equipped facility.
