The Superdrome, a velodrome biking facility at the Collin College Preston Ridge campus, is scheduled to be demolished by the end of December.
Frisco City Council approved an agreement Oct. 16 to give full ownership of the velodrome to the community college, which plans to demolish the 20-year-old velodrome.
The Superdrome is a bicycle racetrack with steep banks and a wooden surface.
Earlier this year, Collin College auctioned off the Superdrome’s infrastructure, including the bicycle track, which was purchased, said Tom Delamater, Collin College’s chief public relations officer. Anything that was not auctioned off will be demolished, he said.
The Superdrome opened in Frisco in 1998 after the city, Collin College and Electronic Data Systems—a technology company now owned by Hewlett-Packard Co.—entered into a joint venture to bring a new sports facility to the area. The college provided the land, and all three entities shared the costs of the $2.5 million facility. One year later EDS withdrew its support for the Superdrome.
The city owned the facility while Collin College owned the land. The Superdrome closed in December 2017 after the city sent out a news release stating the facility had undergone significant annual maintenance because of its age. Attendance and use of the track has also declined for more than a decade.
The 5.5-acre site is planned to be used for the future expansion of the Preston Ridge campus.
