On the ballot: Flower Mound residents to vote on new tennis center in May

Flower Mound residents will have a chance to vote on a new state-of-the-art tennis center in May.

The Town Council unanimously approved placing construction of the center on the May 6 general election ballot during the Feb. 6 meeting. Construction of the center will be labeled Proposition A.

Town Manager James Childers said the project is expected to cost approximately $15 million, with the funding a combination of $7.5 million from general obligation bond proceeds and $7.5 million from the general fund ($2.5 million), the sales tax fund ($2.5 million) and the park development fund ($2.5 million).

Talks began circulating in April when the Flower Mound Parks and Recreation Department presented a feasibility study of a proposed tennis center to the Town Council. In December, council recommended placing the proposed new center on the next election ballot.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in this from residents who want to play tennis and pickleball in Flower Mound,” Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Ann Martin said. “I don’t know if [getting this] is going to be a battle, but it’s going to take work to get the word out. And even if it isn’t approved, we need more tennis courts.”

Physical and electronic fliers will be sent to residents in the coming months presenting information on the proposed project, Childers said.
