Cobblestone Market Cafe is a true family affair, with five members of the Shutt family behind the scenes every day.
Rhonda and Doug Shutt own Cobblestone Market Cafe with their son Joel, while two other sons, Joshua and Matthew, also work full-time at the restaurant. The family opened the business in 2012 after Doug spent years working in the restaurant industry.
"Opportunity created itself for us to get over our fear and open it up," Doug said. "We talked about it for 10 years."
In addition to a menu full of fresh and healthy sandwich, salad and soup options, Cobblestone Market Cafe offers a rotating lunch special Monday through Friday. Options range from chargrilled pork chops to stuffed pork loin to chicken sausage jambalaya and the customer favorite, pecan encrusted chicken.
"Because our customers are busy businesspeople, we always like to have a hot lunch available [for] them, whether they're coming in or calling to pick it up," Rhonda said.
In addition, Rhonda heads up the catering side of the business, which serves a variety of customers and businesses. On average, a typical catering job feeds between 30 to 50 people, but the Shutts can work with larger or smaller orders depending on the request.
Catering customers can choose from a wide variety of hot home-style meals, soups and salads for lunch or dinner or breakfast tacos, fruit and pastries for breakfast. Each meal is served with sides such as vegetables and bread as well.
"People can sub out things on our catering menu," Rhonda said. "We like to offer a variety of options because Houston is so diverse."
Owning their own restaurant also gives the Shutts family creative freedom, whether it be trying out a new menu item or experimenting with decor in the restaurant.
"We can do our own creative things," Rhonda said. "Here the sky is limit, so we have no limitations.
