Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus stops are set for upgrades across the region after the transit agency’s board of directors approved up to $71.5 million for the project on March 24.
The five-year contract covers upgrades to existing bus stops as well as the installation of additional shelters throughout DART’s service area, including stops in Richardson and Plano, according to a news release.
The details
DART plans to upgrade more than 1,000 existing bus stop shelters with improved lighting, seating and protection from weather, as well as adding 350 new shelter locations.
DART will add and replace bus stop infrastructure at new and existing locations, including:
- 1,500 steel benches
- 3,000 trash cans
- 500 bus stop blade lights
Many bus stop shelters are over 20 years old with limited travel information, seating or protection from weather, according to
DART documents. The new and upgraded shelters will include real-time arrival displays, modern passenger technology and 30% more protection from weather elements.
“Investing in modern bus stop amenities is about improving the daily experience for our riders,” outgoing DART CEO Nadine Lee said in the release. “These upgrades will make our system more accessible, safer, and more comfortable while delivering the reliable travel information our customers expect.”
What’s next
The installation and upgrades will be carried out in phases through 2030.
