Dallas Area Rapid Transit Silver Line horns will be quieter in Richardson as quiet zones for the train took effect Aug. 8, according to a news release from the city.

What you need to know

DART has been testing the Silver Line for the last several months, and during testing trains were required to sound their horns as they approached rail crossings to alert motorists and pedestrians.

Train horns will no longer sound routinely at crossings within city limits, and horns will only be used in specific safety situations.

The background

The DART Silver Line is a 26-mile commuter rail that will connect Plano, Richardson, Addison, Carrolton, Coppell and Grapevine to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

The line is scheduled to open for passenger service in October, according to the release.
