Methodist Richardson Medical Center earned two national honors—Premier Inc.’s Top 100 Hospitals and The National Pancreas Foundation’s (NPF) Centers of Excellence for pancreatic cancer care.

The details

The hospital ranked 13th overall in the Top 100 Hospitals award and is the first of its kind for the Methodist Health System, according to a news release.

The award intends to inspire hospitals to pursue higher performance and deliver higher quality care to patients.

“Our team couldn’t be more proud to have earned this distinction,” Methodist Richardson President Ken Hutchenrider said in the release. “This ranking reflects the dedication of our physicians and staff to be the best we can be on a day-to-day basis to serve our communities.”

Per the release, if every hospital in the nation met Premier's Top 100 benchmarks:
  • 330,000 additional lives would be saved annually
  • More than 600,000 additional patients could have outcomes that are free of complications
  • Over $15 billion in in-patient costs would be saved
  • 13,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted to the hospital within the next 30 days
  • The typical patient could be released from the hospital a half-day sooner
What else?

The National Pancreas Foundation recognized the hospital as a “Center of Excellence” for pancreatic cancer care, according to a news release. The audit process determined Methodist Richardson Medical Center used multidisciplinary treatment for pancreatic cancer, treating the “whole patient” with a focus on the best possible outcome and improved quality of life for patients.

"This recognition is a testament to our multidisciplinary approach to treat every pancreatic cancer case as unique," Director of Gastrointestinal Services D. Rohan Jeyarajah, said in the release. "Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, but our team is committed to provide innovative and compassionate care."

To become a center of excellence, a hospital must meet criteria developed by a task force of subject matter experts and patient advocates that include having required expert physician specialties and patient-focused programs.

Quote of note

“I couldn’t be more proud of the high-quality hepatobiliary program we have built here,” Hutchenrider said in the release. “This award is a true achievement of our dedicated team to provide exceptional patient care to our communities and beyond.”

This is the second hospital in the Methodist Health System to earn the designation.
