Richardson is gearing up for this year’s Healthier Texas Community Challenge, an eight-week competition that encourages healthy activity.

Richardson will host a number of free health and wellness events over the next few months as part of the challenge, Corporate Recreation Manager Ashley Wakefield told City Council on Jan. 5.

How it works

The statewide health challenge aims to help people start the new year with healthy habits. After registering for free through the community challenge website, participants can earn points by logging their healthy actions, such as meals or physical activity. Their points contribute to both an individual and a city ranking.

What’s happening

The challenge runs from Jan. 20 to March 15, and Richardson is kicking off the competition with an event Jan. 17 at Huffhines Recreation Center. There will be free Zumba, yoga and door prizes starting at 9 a.m.

Richardson will also host free classes and events throughout the challenge starting Jan. 24, including dance fitness, yoga and nutrition and cooking classes. A walk/run event March 7 at Huffhines Park will celebrate the end of the challenge.

Individuals can win prizes from Healthier Texas every week, and every Richardson participant who reaches 25,000 points will receive a tumbler cup from the city.

Last year, Richardson placed 10th in the state in its large city division.

Richardson is also partnering with the University of Texas at Dallas this year, where students and employees can contribute to a group score.
