Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance will start expansion work this year on its Level III neonatal intensive care unit to double its capacity, a Texas Health spokesperson said.

According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction on the expansion will begin in October and is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 20, 2027. The renovations will increase the number of beds in the 8,725-square-foot NICU space from eight to 16.
Renovations are expected to cost more than $6.3 million, according to the filing.
"As our community continues to grow, so does the need for specialized care for our smallest and most vulnerable patients," said Tracy Martinez, president of Texas Health Alliance. "This project reflects Texas Health's ongoing commitment to providing advanced neonatal care close to home, ensuring more critically ill and premature newborns have access to the specialized, high-acuity care they need while allowing families to remain near their loved ones during a critical time.”
NICU beds are used for newborn babies who need additional care due to prematurity, low birth weight or other medical issues, according to Texas Health’s website. The unit is staffed with neonatologists, therapists and nurses who specifically care for the newborns around the clock.

In December, Texas Health Alliance was named as one of the 2026 High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report, according to previous reporting.
Texas Health Alliance was one of 31 hospitals in the state to earn the honor after 901 hospitals nationwide submitted data about their labor and delivery services.
