Richardson City Secretary Amiee Nemer swore in council members, including new mayor Amir Omar, at a May 12 council meeting.

Council canvassed the May 3 election results where challenger Omar defeated incumbent Bob Dubey.

The results

Omar received 6,696 votes while Dubey received 5,112 votes, and Alan C. North received 489 votes.

In the Place 6 race, incumbent Arefin Shamsul defeated challenger Lisa Marie Kupfer with 7,053 votes. Kupfer received 4,265.

All other council members ran unopposed.

What they’re saying

During the meeting, Dubey remarked on his tenure on council and as the mayor.

“When I left [Richardson ISD] after 40 years, I don’t think this was the vision [my family] had for me,” Dubey said. “This was really fulfilling. I’m honored to do this.”

Omar also addressed the audience after the swearing in ceremony.

“My swearing in tonight, and this moment, is not mine alone.” Omar said. “It’s the result of a lot of work, the belief and the love of so many people who have stood beside me, and in many cases, lifted me up.”

What else?

Approximately 16.9% of Richardson’s 72,964 eligible voters arrived at polls to cast their vote, according to a news release issued by the city. The mayor pro tem, who will run the meeting in the event the mayor is unable to attend, will be selected at the May 19 council meeting.
