With all polling stations reporting in, incumbent Marian Brown has won the Democrat runoff race for Dallas County sheriff.

According to unofficial results, Brown received about 68.6% of votes cast to defeat challenger Lupe Valdez, who previously held the sheriff role from 2005-17.

With 23 out of 243 precincts reporting in, incumbent Marian Brown continues to hold her lead over challenger Lupe Valdez in the runoff election for Dallas County sheriff. So far, Brown has received about 67% of votes cast.


About 20,500 out of the county’s 1,435,719 registered voters, or about 1.5% cast early ballots in the election.

No Republican ran for the position, meaning the winner of the runoff will be the presumptive Dallas County sheriff.

Incumbent Marian Brown is leading the runoff election race against challenger Lupe Valdez for the Dallas County sheriff position after none of the candidates garnered more than 50% of the votes in the primary election.


With early voting results in, Brown has garnered 11,452 votes, or more than 68%. Valdez has received nearly 32% of the votes.

In the primary race, Brown faced a number of challengers, including Sam Mohamad, Rodney Thomas, Roy Williams Jr. and Valdez, who previously served in the sheriff role from 2005-17 before running for Texas governor.

No Republicans ran for the position.

The context


In the March primary race, Brown received 48,427 votes, or 41.96%. Valdez received 43,587 votes, or 37.77%. Brown is the first Black sheriff of Dallas County, according to her campaign website. Valdez was the first Latina sheriff of the county.

Established in 1846, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department oversees the Lew Sterrett Justice Center, which has an average population of more than 6,000 inmates and more than 2,000 employees, according to the department’s website. In addition, the department has jurisdiction in all county areas.

The winner of the runoff will be the presumptive Dallas County sheriff.
