Indoor golf simulator The Back Nine Golf is on track to open in Richardson after the City Plan Commission unanimously recommended approval for a special permit May 19.

The Back Nine Golf is a membership-based indoor golf training facility where members can access simulator technology to practice golf. It will be part of a 17.4-acre shopping center on Coit Road, city planner Christine Ross said.
The company has 200 locations across the country, including spots in Plano, Allen and McKinney. The Richardson location will be open to members 24/7, with four simulator bays that members can reserve in advance.
According to city documents, the simulator bays will be equipped with “Full Swing” technology that simulates a realistic round of golf by allowing players to hit the ball into a large projector screen. Sensors will provide instant feedback on swing speed, ball speed and launch angles. Members will also be able to book lessons with a trainer.
The Back Nine also plans to host tournaments, youth camps and private events like birthday parties and corporate gatherings.
A closer look
Indoor golf is a growing trend, and Back Nine is currently the largest franchise in indoor golf, said owner Anders Hultman. Hultman, a former professional golfer, said the golf simulator does not aim to replace outdoor golf, but to provide an opportunity for golfers to enhance their play.
“Play and practice on the inside to make your game better on the outside,” Hultman said. “When it’s dark, when it’s rainy, when it’s cold, when it’s too hot, you can come into our facilities and get quality practice.”

After the commission recommended approval, the special permit request will be considered by City Council.
