A plan to add additional facilities to a Richardson car dealership is moving forward.

The Richardson City Plan Commission voted to recommend approval of special permits for a vehicle storage lot and service shop at Clay Cooley Volkswagen of Richardson during the July 16 meeting.

Two-minute impact

The special permits will allow for the dealership to operate an overflow vehicle storage area and repair facility behind the existing development at the dealership. Ed Hicks Jr, general manager of Clay Cooley of Volkswagen said buildings near the dealership were purchased from Classic BMW.

The new facilities will include space for file storage, the dealership’s accounting department and a new body shop, Hicks Jr said. According to city documents, uses for a minor repair shop allow for oil changes, window tinting services, tire and battery sales, and more.

Digging deeper

Hicks said the additional changes will create around 47 jobs with the facility expansions.

With the expanded body shop, he added that necessary vehicle body repair work for a Kia dealership in Plano will also take place at the Richardson Volkswagen dealership.

What’s next?

Richardson City Council is tentatively scheduled to consider the case during its Aug. 12 meeting.

Hicks Jr said there are plans to perform cleanup of the interior of the new facilities and exterior landscaping. The certification process to perform vehicle maintenance with Kia, Nissan and Volkswagen typically takes between one and two months.
