Church historian Elaine Johnson said the church is the oldest African American church in Dallas County. The church first started June 19, 1864 under an elm tree, located at what is now Preston Road and Spring Valley Road in Dallas. At the time, laws prohibited slave congregations without a white man present so services were initially led by white circuit preacher Rev. Robert Fabius Butler.
To celebrate its history, Johnson said the church is holding a ribbon cutting June 1 for its history and archive room. An anniversary service will be held June 16 at 10:30 a.m.
