Through a partnership with Credit Union of Texas, Richardson ISD has opened a student-run bank on the campus of Lloyd V. Berkner High School and STEM Academy. Called a SMART Branch, the bank branch has students from the school’s career and technical education program accepting deposits, processing withdrawals, opening accounts and processing loan payments. It includes a lobby, offices, a classroom and a secured ATM area.

Because the branch will be run in-part by students, it will only be open 9 a.m.-4:20 p.m. during the academic calendar. To ease any concerns from customers that their finances will be handled by students, CUTX Chief Retail Officer Courtney Coss said each student working there will undergo the same training as any other employee. Plus they will be overseen by an on-site CUTX manager and Berkner career and technical education teachers.
