After working as a coffee consultant with Nestlé for four years, Alex Deer traded in his corporate job to follow his entrepreneurial-themed dreams.

In 2018, he launched Mojo’s Java, a coffee catering business. In 2021, he added another component to the business when he opened a storefront in Richardson. He rents a corner spot in Cottonwood Market, which makes his business accessible via the market entrance, double doors leading directly to his store or a walk-up window.

“I was into the hospitality aspect of providing a warm, welcoming coffee shop environment with an Italian twist on it,” Deer said of his inspiration.

He said he chose this location because of the rent, and he thought, “it might just work.”

Deer said the coffee bar is a place his catering customers can come and “try before they buy.”

Explaining the origin of the business name, Deer said, “I chose Mojo’s Java because I drink coffee with my cat Mojo every morning at my kitchen table.”

The menu features a variety of classic coffee shop options, such as espresso, cappuccino and lattes. He also created popular specialty drinks like the dark chocolate coconut latte.

Deer added other pet names throughout the menu. The namesake for Wilbur’s coffee cake is another pet cat. Stella’s blueberry muffins and Harwood’s Key lime pie are named after pet dogs.

In addition to pet names, Deer also incorporated names of family and friends into the menu.

He said his mother, Rachel Deer, has been instrumental in helping this business succeed. She helps him make the baked items sold at his shop. She has two items named after her: Rachel’s apple rum cake and Rachel’s biscotti.

Deer described the ambiance of his business as an “eclectic cafe.” Artwork painted by his mother adds to the aesthetic of the space.

“I’m here five days a week. You’re in my house, and you’ll be treated like family,” he said.
