Community members are invited to pay their respects this Sept. 11 by attending a 9/11 memorial at Prosper’s new Central Fire Station.

The remembrance event, slated to start at 9 a.m., marks the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Looking back

The Central Fire Station celebrated the grand opening of its new space at 911 Safety Way, Prosper, with a hose-uncoupling ceremony Aug. 8.

One room in the more than 30,080-square-foot space is a designated 9/11 memorial museum displaying a detailed timeline of the attacks as well as photos, video clips and donated memorabilia.

Diving in deeper

The museum displays an approximately 7,500-pound steel beam taken from one of the fallen towers. Instead of being permanently built into the memorial, it lies on a trailer bed so it can be moved for memorial events.

“We've come to realize it would be selfish for us to permanently mount our steel beam because it would no longer be used for its intention, and that was to bring remembrance to September the 11th,” fire Chief Stuart Blasingame said Aug. 8.

Here is where the beam will be taken this year, starting with a Sept. 9 Dallas 9/11 Stair Climb:

The beam will be returned to the Central Fire Station after the Guns and Hoses Boxing event in Allen, where it will stay through Sept. 11, Blasingame said in an email.

Also of note

A mobile blood drive will also be taking place at the Central Fire Station from 7:30 a.m.- 6 p.m., according to the town’s website. Residents interested in donating blood can reserve a time slot here.
