Service is provided by Vonlane, a regional transportation company that caters to business and leisure travelers.
The route begins at the Renaissance Dallas hotel in Legacy West and terminates at the DoubleTree by Hilton near Austin’s Arboretum shopping center, according to Vonlane CEO Alex Danza.
About the company
Vonlane partners with hotels to operate terminals on hotel property, Danza said. Riders have access to hotel amenities such as restaurants and on-site parking garages, and the hotels make money from riders who choose to book overnight stays.
Danza likened his buses to “a private jet on wheels.” Each bus features reclining seats, free Wi-Fi and refreshments provided by on-board attendants.
In Texas, the company has terminals in and around five major cities:
- Austin
- Dallas
- Fort Worth
- Houston
- San Antonio
The Plano City Council approved a special use permit allowing Vonlane to operate out of the Renaissance Dallas at a Dec. 8 meeting.
The permit only allows the operation of a transit center in conjunction with a hotel, according to city documents. If there isn’t a hotel on the property, then the special permit no longer applies.
Other restrictions placed on the permit include:
- No transit bus access to Windrose Avenue
- Transit buses cannot be stored on the hotel property except for temporary loading and unloading
- Only one transit bus is allowed on-site at a time
- The property owner must submit a letter agreeing to prevent adverse effects in the vicinity, and can be compelled to add parking if the City Council determines a public nuisance has occurred
A city spokesperson confirmed that Vonlane’s special use permit is not connected to the upcoming special election, according to previous reporting.
What they’re saying
Multiple council members described positive personal experiences with Vonlane.
“I have used [Vonlane] to travel down to Austin on numerous occasions, and I had a great experience,” council member Steve Lavine said.
Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Julie Holmer and council member Rick Horne took a Vonlane bus together on a prior trip to Austin.
“I am a huge fan,” Holmer said. “I love Vonlane. I am thrilled to have access from Plano and not have to make the commute over to Love Field.”
Looking ahead
During his presentation to council members, Danza hinted that a route to Houston may be in Plano’s future.
“We haven’t started looking at Plano [to] Houston yet, but it’s a natural next thing to do,” Danza said.
