What happened?
Prior to the ceremonial turning of dirt, Mabrie Jackson, H-E-B managing director of public affairs, addressed the crowd with a message of welcome and facts.
“Today is your day. You are joining the H-E-B family. There are 470 stores. We have about 165,000 employees—we call them partners. We are so excited to break ground here,” Jackson said. “We’ll add about 600 partners to this site. We’ll have 600 new jobs coming to your town.”
The framework
Mike Jarzombek, H-E-B vice president of the northwest food drug division, said this will be a 122,000 square feet store uniquely designed for the Murphy community.
“In addition to fresh food, quality products and community services which we’ve become known for across the state, this store will feature a unique spectacular deli with cheese and charcuterie island,” Jarzombek said. “The pharmacy will have a drive-thru service. Meal simple department with fresh convenient chef-inspired meals prepared in store.”
Additional features will include HEB True Texas Barbecue with a drive-thru; fresh sushi prepared by an in-house sushi chef; a bakery department featuring handmade artisan breads, cakes and freshly made tortillas; curbside and home delivery.
How we got here
City of Murphy Mayor Scott Bradley provided insight into the timeline of the Texas-based grocery store opening in Murphy.
“Well over a decade ago, I remember very clearly getting called into a special executive session. They said H-E-B is going to buy that plot of land off of McCreary and 544, but you can’t tell anybody,” Bradley said. “Ten minutes later I started getting emails about when they would start construction. It was the worst kept secret.”
Quote of note
“We want to thank H-E-B for coming in and deciding now is the time to build,” Bradley said. “I will be here for the brisket, I will be here getting my gas, getting my car washed. This is going to be one of my favorite places to come.”
