The opening for the $6-million expansion of Frisco Athletic Center's outdoor water park has been delayed to June 13.
Recent weather has slowed construction on the expansion and staff training, according to a city press release. Rick Wieland, Frisco's Parks and Recreation director, said the staff needs additional safety training on the new facilities and must conduct safety checks on the expansion before it can open. Because of the delayed opening, the center has canceled all birthday parties scheduled June 6-12 at the water park and all swim lessons June 8 and 10 at the outdoor pool area. Lessons scheduled for June 9 and 11 will be relocated to the indoor pool area. No indoor pool lessons will not be affected. The expansion includes the Preston Plunge—a four-lane water slide—and The Fort—a children's water playground area with slides and spray features. The lazy river has also been extended 300 feet from the existing outdoor water park. “We’re very excited to showcase this new area to our citizens, so the delays are disappointing,” Wieland said. “But swimmers' safety has to be our first priority.”
