Web retail giant Amazon plans to create more than 5,000 new jobs nationwide, including many in Tarrant and Dallas counties, the company announced in July.

Amazon is opening fulfillment centers in Haslet, to the west of the Grapevine-Colleyville-Southlake area and Coppell to the west.

"It will be a home run for Haslet," Tarrant County Commissioner Gary Fickes said,.

Amazon spokeswoman Mary Osako said "it's safe to say several hundred" jobs will be created in the area.

Osako could not elaborate on jobs, but Fickes said he has heard that as many as 1,000 more seasonal employees could be hired from October to January.

The full-time jobs pay 30 percent more than traditional retail jobs, Osako said, and provide comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of work.

The company is opening 17 new centers across the country, including another Texas location in San Antonio.

The Haslet center is 1.2 million square feet, Fickes said, and went up in about six months.

Amazon, which opened on the web in 1995, claims to have "Earth's Biggest Selection." The Fortune 500 company is based in Seattle.
