A small crew of workmen spent this week renovating history on Main Street Grapevine. Inside of the 93-year-old building now home to Willhoite's restaurant, they laid new oak flooring on top of what owners believe was the oldest in-use original flooring on the strip.
Over the years, the flooring had been patched up for safety reasons, said Eric Parker, president of PRP Food Service Inc., which owns Willhoite's. But early this week, the business laid a complete new layer of flooring on top of the old one.
The new wood was installed by Wednesday, and Parker said he plans to stain the new floor by the end of this week.
The iconic Willhoite's building offered dry goods back in 1914, and in 1919 it was transformed into the city's first automotive gas station and care center. It became a garage-themed restaurant serving classic American dishes in 1981, and continues to offer hearty dishes and live music today.
