Michelle Paxton wanted to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. But life took a turn in a different direction.

"I never imagined owning a bakery," she said. "I wanted to go to West Point and be a pilot, but they didn't let women fly combat helicopters, so I ended up getting a business degree."

Paxton worked in marketing and advertising for Brazilian-style steakhouse Texas De Brazil for 10 years until a chance to take over a friend's business came up. Ruthie Stivers owns Delicious Cakes in Addison and previously owned the Southlake bakery. Paxton took over Delicious Cakes in Southlake on Aug. 1.

"It's fun," Paxton said. "It's been a labor of love."

Delicious Cakes makes cupcakes and cakes for any occasion, including weddings and birthdays. Cakes come in different flavors, such as fresh strawberry, raspberry liqueur or red velvet. Cakes can be custom designed and shaped—a guitar, a ladybug or a classic wedding cake.

"It's nothing like anything you'll ever eat," Paxton said.
