The Samaritan Inn CEO Jill Sciglian welcomed two- and four-legged guests to a Feb. 26 groundbreaking event for a pet kennel at their McKinney facility.
The new kennel will almost triple the capacity space of the existing on-site kennel, according to the nonprofit’s website.
The details
The 1,244-square-foot kennel, which will accommodate up to 28 pets—16 dogs and 12 cats—is slated for completion Oct. 1, Chief Development Officer Kellie Maynard said.

The Samaritan Inn opened in 1984 and the existing pet kennel was built in 2010. The Inn offers shelter to unhoused single men, women and families, and has the capacity to serve up to 226 residents.
“This initiative will directly contribute to our mission of supporting individuals and families on their path to stability, offering them the dignity and comfort of knowing their pets are safe,” Maynard said in an email. “With this expansion, The Inn can continue to foster the deep bond between people and their pets, ensuring that no one is left behind in their time of need.”
What’s special about it?
Out of the 11 transitional shelters located in Collin County, The Samaritan Inn is the only comprehensive housing program providing boarding for pets of any kind, Maynard said.
Maynard said some people avoid shelters because pets aren’t accepted.
“As a result, people are often forced to choose between giving up their pets and accessing critical services such as housing, healthcare and employment assistance,” Maynard said.
