Construction work on McKinney’s new city hall is nearing completion, and residents will soon be able to access city services at the new location.

Ahead of the opening, some disruptions to city services are expected as various city departments move to the new facility.

The gist

Various city staff and departments are set to relocate to the new city hall located at 401 E. Virginia St. in January. As departments move to the facility, which is located about half of a mile from the current city hall at 222 N. Tennessee St., some interruptions to city services are expected.

Some walk-in services and departments will experience temporary closures, according to the city’s website. Closures to note include:
  • Utility billing will be closed Jan. 8, and reopen for walk-in service at the new city hall Jan. 9.
  • Animal Services, Code Compliance and Health Compliance will be closed Jan. 13-14, and reopen at the new location Jan. 15.
  • Building Inspections, Development Services, Engineering and Planning will be closed Jan. 15-16, and reopen at the new city hall Jan. 17.
The dates provided are estimates, Senior Media and Public Relations Manager Denise Lessard said, noting that there could be changes in the case of delays during the moving process. The city’s website will be updated with any changes to these dates, she said.

Services available online, including alarm permits, water billing and the citizen self-service portal, will remain accessible through the city’s website. All field operations, such as inspections, will also continue without interruption.

The context

The 175,000-square-foot facility, which began being constructed in October 2022, is meant to serve as a “central gathering space” and will accommodate city growth, according to a news release. The project is primarily funded by a $50 million bond passed by voters in 2019.

The five-story building is being constructed on about 9 acres on the east side of McDonald Street and will include:

Space for most of the city’s administrative offices and city services
  • A 180-seat council chambers
  • A 96-seat event space
  • A conferencing center and conference rooms
Looking ahead

McKinney City Council meetings will remain at the current city hall through January, the city’s website states. The first McKinney City Council meeting in February is expected to be held at the new city hall.

A grand opening event for the new facility is expected to be held in the spring, but details have not yet been announced. For more information on updates related to the new McKinney City Hall, visit www.mckinneytexas.org.
