A new fire headquarters facility for the McKinney Fire Department is expected to be complete by August 2025, according to a news release.

City and fire department officials broke ground at an Oct. 10 event, marking the beginning of nearly two years of construction on the project.

The details

The new campus will feature three buildings, a fire administration building, a fire logistics building and a new Fire Station No. 2 facility.

The fire administration building will be a two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility featuring conference rooms, training rooms, a covered balcony and more. This building will house about 40 employees in fire administration and emergency management as well as employees from the department’s training and emergency medical services divisions, fire Chief Paul Dow said at the groundbreaking event.

The building will also house the fire marshal's office and will serve as the department’s emergency operations center.

The second building on the site will be a 20,000-square-foot fire logistics center, Dow said. The building will include offices along with a warehouse area to store equipment and medical supplies.

The facility will also include space to conduct maintenance and repairs on department equipment along with storing and laundering bunker gear and helmets, Dow said.

The third building on the site will be a new facility for Fire Station No. 2. The existing fire station at 2001 Community Ave. is about 30 years old and is also the busiest fire station in the city, Dow said. The station’s new building will be 16,000 square feet, about three times larger than the existing building.

Quote of note

“We are very grateful for the trust and the opportunity that the public has provided us [and] the fact that you're giving us the best possible equipment and facilities to provide services to the city of McKinney,” Dow said.

The cost

The construction of the new facility is a $48 million project, according to the release.

The project is being funded by bond funds approved by McKinney voters in 2019. The $350 million bond included $75 million for public safety projects, including the new fire headquarters campus along with fire station Nos. 8 and 11, according to the city’s website.

Additional fire stations are also being considered by a bond committee for funding as part of the potential 2024 municipal bond.

Also of note

The campus will be located at 2100 Taylor Burk Drive, directly east of the existing McKinney Public Safety Building.

The project will be designed and built by McKinney-based Pogue Construction along with Martinez Architects, Gensler and 720 Design.

Once the fire department’s administration relocates to its new campus following the project’s completion in 2025, the McKinney Police Department will expand within the McKinney Public Safety Building, according to the release.

The relocation of the fire department’s administration will result in better coordination and efficiency across city departments along with increased safety and security for the city’s residents, according to the release.
