Over 1,000 members of eight drum corps performed at McKinney ISD stadium on July 23 as part of the DCI McKinney event, a stop on the Drum Corps International Summer Tour.

The details

The DCI McKinney event has been held at the stadium for three consecutive years. This year’s event saw similar attendance to the prior year, which saw about 3,000 attendees, said Dean Cimini, president of Marching Music Made in McKinney, the local organizing committee for the event.

The event did collect more revenue than the previous year, he said, due to parking and concessions sales.

About 500 people attended the Drumline Expo held at Tupps Brewery the day prior to the DCI McKinney event. The expo featured drum lines from three drum corps. Ticket sales for the event grew by nearly 50% compared to the prior year, Cimini said.

“Energy at both events was sky high,” Cimini said in an email. “I especially want to call out the [Drumline Expo] where, even though we had rain, the fans stuck around as the drummers played.”

Quote of note

“Energy at the DCI show was also amazing,” Cimini said. “The Mandarins and Santa Clara Vanguard, who are in a fierce battle to crack the top five in DCI standings, closed out our show and delivered a fantastic performance for the fans.”

The impact

Proceeds from the event will be donated to McKinney ISD band programs.

The Marching Music Made in McKinney organization has donated about $60,000 raised from the events held in 2022 and 2023.

The amount raised for the program from this year’s events will be announced at a check presentation scheduled for Sept. 18 at the district’s annual Band Night event, Cimini said.
