At the Dec. 13 board meeting, trustees approved costs for a part of the project that would refresh Slaughter Elementary School.
Voters approved the 2021 MISD bond that included funds to refresh Slaughter Elementary. The school was originally constructed in 1971 and last underwent a renovation in 2003, according to meeting documents.
The district’s facilities department will do the work themselves and keep the project in house, according to meeting documents. This helps save money, which can be used for other bond projects, documents stated. Estimates show that the partial probable costs are $2.67 million for consultant costs, HVAC work, fire alarm upgrades and lighting updates. Other costs, such as new countertops, cabinets, paint, partitions and more, have yet to be determined, according to meeting documents. District staff said more information about those items will be presented at the January meeting.
“We try to get the items for the longest lead timelines first, and then we try to work down until we get all things filled in,” staff said.
The board approved the renovation work unanimously.
