Assistant Fire Chief Paul Dow has been named interim fire chief after former Fire Chief Danny Kistner announced his retirement, according to a news release.

Dow will begin the role on Feb. 1, following Kistner’s departure. Dow has more than 27 years of experience, including as a fire chief in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2018 to 2021. Dow joined the McKinney Fire Department as assistant fire chief in 2022 following his time as a consultant for the city to develop the Fire Officer Training Program, according to a news release.

"It is an honor to serve with the men and women of this outstanding fire department. We have a very bright future ahead of us," Dow said.

Dow is a designated Chief Fire Officer from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Dow has also worked as an instructor at Collin College, as well as Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, according to a news release.

"The fire department is full of dedicated, hard-working individuals who are committed to providing for the safety of our citizens,” City Manager Paul Grimes said. “We are confident our Fire Department will thrive under Chief Dow's leadership as we conduct a national search for a fire chief.”

Dow is expected to serve as interim fire chief until a permanent fire chief is appointed. The city is conducting a nationwide search to fill the position, according to a news release.
