McKinney City Council members unanimously authorized the sale of parkland that will be used for the development of the US 380 bypass project at a July 16 meeting. Roughly 2.8 acres of land in north McKinney will be purchased by the Texas Department of Transportation as part of the right-of-way acquisition process for the US 380 bypass project.

2. Bypass process begins: Businesses close, see changes as US 380 land acquisition begins

As the Texas Department of Transportation makes progress on projects along US 380 in Collin and Denton counties, businesses along the roadway have begun to feel the effects of construction. So far, three businesses have closed in a McKinney shopping center at the northwest corner of University Drive and Walnut Grove Road—Jason’s Deli, White Rhino Coffee and 3Natives, all citing right-of-way acquisitions for the US 380 bypass.


3. 4-acre surf lagoon, resort-style hotel slated for $200M mixed-use project in south McKinney

A $200 million mixed-use project is expected to bring a resort-style hotel and surfing lagoon to a site in south McKinney, according to a Dec. 13 news release. The Cannon Beach project, which will also feature retail spaces with restaurants and family-focused entertainment offerings, is slated to attract 300,000 visitors annually. The first phase of the project is expected to open as soon as 2026, the release stated.

4. 14 businesses, restaurants announced for McKinney’s West Grove

West Grove will bring new dining and business options to McKinney once it opens. Among the new businesses are Sephora, Velvet Taco, Chipotle, Chewy Vet Care and more, according to a list of businesses that have signed leases, announced Dec. 12. The various businesses announced are expected to open in 2025, a news release states. De La Vega Capital and Development is the developing company behind the 53-acre project.


5. Melissa to see new Kroger marketplace store in 2024

Representatives of Kroger and local leaders broke ground on a new Kroger Marketplace store in Melissa on Sept. 7, according to a news release. The 123,000-square-foot store will be located on about 20 acres on the north side of SH 121 between Liberty Way and Washington Drive. The grocery store, which is expected to open in late 2024, will create between 250 and 300 new jobs, according to the release.

6. ‘A world-class facility’: $220M concert venue to draw national acts to McKinney

Music venue and hospitality company Venu announced March 12 a new $220 million open-air amphitheater coming to US 75 and SH 121 in McKinney. The new entertainment venue, called the Sunset Amphitheater, will have a capacity of 20,000 people and is expected to open in 2026, according to a news release.The venue will be situated on 46 acres located northeast of US 75 and SH 121, adjacent to the Sheraton McKinney Hotel.


7. McKinney voters oppose increasing City Council term limits, compensation

Following the failure of two out of four bond propositions considered by McKinney residents during the Nov. 5 election, city leaders and political action committees have begun to speak out. Four propositions regarding potential amendments to the city's charter were considered by voters. According to unofficial voting results from Collin County, only two of the four propositions passed.

8. Jason’s Deli to close north McKinney location due to US 380 project

Just over a year after opening its doors, Jason’s Deli in north McKinney closed July 31, according to signage at the location. The closure is a result of property acquisitions to allow for roadway expansion as part of the US 380 bypass project, said Kim Collura, vice president of marketing for Jason’s Deli.


9. CosMc’s, Dave and Buster’s among businesses coming to north McKinney retail development

The Plaza at Fort Buckner development will feature 150,000-square-feet of retail space for restaurants, an entertainment venue and more, according to developer Eric Seitz of The Seitz Group. The retail center, located at the northwest corner of US 380 and Hardin Boulevard, is currently under development. The first phase of the project is located along the US 380 frontage and is expected to see businesses begin to open in the first quarter of 2024, Seitz said.

10. Plan for commercial passenger terminal at McKinney National Airport moves forward

McKinney leaders are continuing to pursue the construction of a commercial passenger terminal on city-owned land on the east side of McKinney National Airport. McKinney City Council members unanimously approved a rezoning for a 280-acre tract of city-owned land the east side of the airport at a Dec. 3 meeting. City documents in the rezoning request state that the project proposed for the site will include a 45,000-square-foot passenger terminal.
