A new parking lot area in McKinney has taken a crucial step towards getting the zoning it needs to function.

In January, the city announced a major project to redevelop the area east of Hwy. 5 in McKinney into a new corridor that would be an extension of the city’s downtown. This includes the relocation and expansion of Tupps Brewery, the new community municipal complex, new roads and now a new public parking lot.

The area for the parking lot is located at 511 Green St. and 701 Anthony St., documents stated. McKinney Planning and Zoning commissioners considered and approved a request to rezone the land from residential zoning to a government complex district to allow for the new lot at their July 27 meeting.

The parking lot would provide public parking to anyone that needs a space for the future area the city is developing, officials said.

The rezoning request will be sent with a favorable recommendation from commissioners to the City Council for consideration at its Aug. 17 meeting.
