A segment of Main Street will be renamed Fighting Farmers Way after Lewisville City Council approved an ordinance June 19.

The details

West Main Street from the center point of the Main Street bridge over I-35E to a point 220 feet west of the bridge’s center point will be renamed, according to the agenda item.

How we got here

The ordinance was created after the Texas Department of Transportation rejected city staff’s proposal to add Fighting Farmers to the decorative murals included in the Main Street interchange project.

The city is funding aesthetic enhancements for the project, which is being spearheaded by TxDOT. The project’s scope includes widening the interchange and adding murals, walkways and lighting to make way for easier traffic flows.

The Fighting Farmers water tower was demolished in 2022 after the aesthetic package for Main Street was designed. Council directed staff to commemorate the tower and Lewisville High School with murals on each side of I-35E depicting the water tower and including the words “Fighting Farmers,” according to the agenda item.

TxDOT rejected the words “Fighting Farmers” on the murals due to a policy of not allowing words incorporated into aesthetics other than what would be included in an official city logo, according to the agenda item. The murals were revised a second time to exclude the wording.

City staff received direction from council to move forward with changing the street name instead in May.

Also of note

The street name change will not affect addresses along West Main Street.
