On July 30, the 18th annual Unity Luncheon and Nonprofit of the Year Award ceremony was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lewisville.

What happened

Lori Fickling president/CEO of Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce said in an email that this event, which featured more than 40 south Denton County nonprofits, gives business leaders in the community the opportunity to interact with nonprofit representatives and learn firsthand about their mission.

The action taken

Serve Lewisville was this year’s award winner. The other two finalists were Heart of the City Lewisville and Winning the Fight.

Serve Lewisville houses multiple nonprofit organizations and provides inter-network referrals.

Heart of the City Lewisville provides food, clothing and life/skills coaching.

Wining the Fight provides drug education, support and guidance to individuals and families who struggle with the disease of addiction.

Notable quote

“Being named the 2023 Nonprofit of the Year is a testament to the impact we’re making in the community,” said Kristen Gramling, Serve Lewisville director of operations, in an email. “This recognition fuels our commitment to partnering with local nonprofits and driving the positive change that’s already happening. We’re excited to build on this momentum and continue making a difference together.”

The details

The Nonprofit of the Year Award is a product of a collaborative effort between the Lewisville area and Flower Mound chambers of commerce, and five local Rotary clubs.

“Any nonprofit that is a member of either the Lewisville area or Flower Mound chambers are invited to attend the luncheon with a free expo table and one free ticket,” Fickling said.

All the applicants are reviewed by the committee made up of one representative from each of the five sponsoring Rotary clubs and the event title sponsor. This year’s title sponsor was Independent Financial. That committee then chooses the top three finalists.

“The committee reviews those three finalists and selects the winner, based on their application and what the committee knows of them in the community,” Fickling said. “In turn, they choose one of them as the winner.”
