Some baseball fields at MacArthur Park in Coppell are getting new bleacher shade structures to replace ones affected by severe weather in 2024.

In a nutshell

On Jan. 14, Coppell City Council members authorized $75,651.46 for the purchase of seven new bleacher cover shades to be installed at the baseball fields. The purchase will be funded by the Coppell Recreation Development Corporation fund, according to a staff memo.

The shades are being purchased and installed by USA Shade, according to the memo. Shades will be replaced on fields 1-7 at the park and will provide relief from the sun and protection from foul balls hit into the bleacher area.

The shades need to be replaced after severe windstorms hit the area in May 2024. The city filed an insurance claim with the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool for the loss of property and the claim was approved.

About $67,292 of the total cost for new shades will be covered by the insurance claim which will be paid out in two installments. An initial payment of $32,396 was already sent to the city. Another payment of $34,896 will be sent to the city once it receives a final invoice from USA Shade.
