The necessary zoning changes to allow for upgrades to a Coppell facility are now in place after the latest revision to the planned development overlay for the Coppell Service Center took place.

Coppell City Council approved a rezoning request to update the planned development regulation to allow for a new building with over 8,600 square feet of space and additional parking in front of the existing service center during their March 26 meeting. The renovated facility is planned to enhance the structure that currently sits near the Coppell Life Safety Park.

Two-minute impact

The rezoning approval allows city staff to move forward with the project ahead of a planned renovation for the Coppell Service Center costing nearly $12 million. According to city documents, the existing facility opened 24 years ago.

In addition to the construction of a new building with 8,664 square feet of space, the project's scope includes an update to the current facilities, per city documents.

“I’m really excited about this project,” council member Kevin Nevels said. “This part of town needs a lot of love.”

The details

The Coppell Service Center is home to work crews for several departments: fleet, public works, streets, water utilities and community experiences. A fenced-in outdoor courtyard between the new building and existing service center, 22 trees, and a natural channel to filter out pollutants will also be included in the project, Senior Planner Mary Paron-Boswell said.

She added that the new building will include:
  • Office and collaboration spaces
  • A meeting room
  • Restrooms
  • A break room
The remodel of the current building will include the addition of a locker room, crew and traffic management facilities, and storage areas. The city’s planning and zoning commission recommended approval of the zoning changes to accommodate the necessary changes during its Feb. 29 meeting.

What’s next?

With the zoning in place, the next step for council will be allocating funds to pay for the project. Per city documents, city staff plan to bring a request for funds to a future meeting, but no specific date was given.
