Coppell City Council heard plans during their Oct. 11 work session for a request to add a deceleration lane along a portion of the SH 121 frontage road.

The proposed deceleration lane would be added to the intersection of SH 121 Frontage Road and East Lake Drive to help prevent car crashes. Speed and safety concerns were raised after a recent accident in the area, according to the presentation.

Director of Public Works Kent Collins said accidents happen in the area because drivers who are slowing down to turn right into the adjacent neighborhood are rear-ended by vehicles that do not slow down.

According to crash records pulled by city staff, five accidents have occurred over the last four years; two could have been prevented by a deceleration lane, Collins said.

The estimated cost for the proposed project would be $250,000, which includes design and permitting. Council went on to approve project funding through the American Rescue Plan Act.
