What you need to know

Alkhatib and Lassahn both currently serve on the LISD board. Lassahn holds the Place 1 seat while Alkhatib holds the Place 6 seat.

Beginning with the May election, the district is transitioning to a hybrid election system where places 1 through 5 will become single-member districts, and places 6 and 7 will be at large. The change to single-member districts means only residents in the corresponding geographical area can vote for members running for the respective place. The places that are at large can be voted on irrespective of a voter’s area of residence, according to the district website. The board approved the change last year.

The move to a hybrid election system has prompted a shift in labels for the places held by board members, Communications Director Samantha FitzPatrick said. In light of this change, Alkhatib and Lassahn filed candidate applications for places that reflect the transition. Buddy Bonner is running unopposed for the at-large Place 6 seat.
