After the closure of Pinkerton Elementary, the district’s International Baccalaureate, IB, program is moving to Wilson Elementary and families have until Dec. 20 to decide if their students will continue in the program.

Coppell ISD sent an email to affected families Dec. 5 and the form will be open through Dec. 20, after which families will be unable to make changes to their selection, according to district documents.

What's happening?

On Oct. 23, trustees approved consolidating Pinkerton’s IB program to Wilson Elementary in a 5-2 vote. The decision is a result of Pinkerton’s closure, which aims to help mitigate the district’s budget challenges by saving $2.1 million. The CISD board adopted a $7.5 million shortfall budget in fiscal year 2024-25.

Pinkerton Elementary families will need to decide if they are continuing in the program at the Wilson campus or leaving the program to remain at their zoned campus. With Pinkerton’s closure students will attend Wilson and Austin Elementary schools and Austin attendance zones could be adjusted to Town Center and Lakeside.

The decision to consolidate the district’s dual language immersion program will also contribute to CISD plans to adjust multiple attendance zones to make space at affected campuses, according to district documents.

Also of note

The IB program is a specialized learning model that seeks to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young students, according to district documents.

The program emphasizes developing traits that shape global citizens. Students will be exposed to real-world topics, develop essential skills like thinking, communication and self-management, and be encouraged to be curious.

The program also has a Spanish enrichment component. Students are exposed to basic vocabulary, phrases, and grammar in Spanish while continuing their main academic subjects in English. The focus is on building listening, speaking, and basic reading skills in Spanish through interactive activities and games.

The consolidations will take effect in the 2025-26 school year. Additionally, the transfer window for CISD residents opens March 3 and closes March 28. Transfer application information can be found on the district webpage under transfers.

A transfer application has a review process inclusive of space on the campus and in the grade level and is not guaranteed.
