Coppell ISD third through eighth grade students outperformed state averages on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness test across the board, according to results released in June.

Scores were consistent with spring 2023 results across all grade levels in all but math and fifth grade science, which dropped, according to Texas Education Agency data. This was in contrast to a trend of lower scores in all subjects than last year in districts across the state, according to a news release.

The gist

This was the second year of a redesigned STAAR, which aimed to more closely align with how students are taught in the classroom. The new assessment is administered online.

Students who take the test are measured using four performance levels:
  • Did not meet grade level: student does not show a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills, and is unlikely to succeed in the next grade level without significant academic intervention
  • Approaches grade level: student has some gaps in assessed knowledge and skills and is likely to succeed in the next grade level with targeted academic intervention, constituting a passing score
  • Meets grade level: student is highly likely to succeed in the next grade level and demonstrates a strong understanding of the material
  • Masters grade level: student is skilled in the subject area and mastered the course material
By the numbers

CISD students scored higher than the state in math, but scores were lower overall compared to last year. Despite seventh grade math being a weak point statewide, over 90% of CISD students approached grade level and 80% met or exceeded it, per TEA data.

Reading scores in CISD increased slightly in fifth grade, but remained consistent with 2023 scores in all other levels.

Science scores in the district surpassed the state average, but dipped for fifth grade and increased for eighth grade.

CISD social studies scores increased slightly from last year, and surpassed the state average for eighth grade.
