Ground spraying will take place in Lewisville after the city received confirmation of its third positive West Nile virus mosquito trap this year.

The positive sample came from a trap collected in the 1200 block of North Old Orchard Lane, according to a news release. The area is one of nine core sites in Lewisville regularly tested for the mosquito-borne virus.

Spraying is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. July 18 and 19, weather permitting. Ground spraying will be conducted in a half-mile radius of the testing location. The insecticide being used is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and poses minimal risk to humans and the environment, according to the news release.

City crews are regularly walking through and visually inspecting creeks and drainage channels to look for potential mosquito breeding sites. Multiple staff members are authorized to apply anti-larval dunks or localized pesticide to curb the mosquito population.

The city also encourages residents to immediately take care of any standing water issues on their property to help fight mosquito breeding sites. Residents can call 972-219-3484 to report mosquito complaints.
