In 1954, founder Kurt Ziebart began his first attempts at rustproofing body panels of his 1953 Packard. Once his rustproofing sealant was perfected and patented tools were developed, he and partners Rudy Herman, Joe Selagi and George Krausmann set up a new company called Auto Rustproofing Company.
In 1959, they opened their first rustproofing shop in Detroit. Since then, the company has grown into a worldwide network of over 400 franchise locations with 1,300 Ziebart service centers in 37 countries, according to the website.
