Looking for a new place to grab a bite or drink? These five restaurants are bringing new menu options to the Lake Highlands/Lakewood area in 2023. This list is not comprehensive.

1. JuJu’s Coffee

JuJu’s Coffee is set to open in its first brick-and-mortar location after operating out of a converted 1962 Airstream trailer for about a year. The owners, married couple Nick and Julia Rocha, expect to open the shop in Lakewood at 6038 La Vista Drive on May 8. JuJu’s Coffee will serve only takeout options when it initially opens, but Nick said he and Julia plan to eventually offer seating inside. The menu will include coffee and tea drinks, sodas, and hot chocolate. 2. Strouderosa BBQ

Strouderosa BBQ, a catering company featuring homemade-style barbecue, is scheduled to open May 2 after delaying its opening from January. The company’s first brick-and-mortar location will open at 9090 Skillman St., Ste. 174A, in the Lake Highlands Village Shopping Center. Owner Trisha Stroud said the company has faced setbacks, such as necessary building repairs and delayed equipment delivery. Strouderosa BBQ will serve a traditional barbecue-style menu with sauce flavors that include homemade jalapeno, peach chipotle and blood orange habanero. 972-643-8692. www.strouderosa.com


3. Gen Korean BBQ

California-based Gen Korean BBQ House is set to open in its first Dallas location in the Lower Greenville area. The restaurant is expected to open in September at 5500 Greenville Ave., manager Don Kim said. The 4,417-square-foot space is located in the Old Town in the Village shopping center. Gen Korean BBQ House is known for its modern neon dining rooms and all-you-can-eat meats grilled at customers’ tables. It offers “boundless menu options consisting of freshly prepared meats, seafood and vegetables,” including a variety of traditional Korean side dishes, according to the company’s website. www.genkoreanbbq.com

4. Merit Coffee

San Antonio-based Merit Coffee's fifth Dallas cafe is opening in Lakewood in August. The coffee roasting company has been looking to expand in the Lakewood area for about two years, said Charlie Paulette, vice president of sales and marketing. Merit Coffee looks for expansion opportunities in neighborhoods with active communities and unique personalities, with Paulette citing Lakewood’s outdoor recreational opportunities and community-focused residents as reasons for its selection. Each Merit Coffee cafe is designed to fit the personality of its neighborhood, Paulette said. Although he declined to share specific design details about the Lakewood location, he promised it will be “unique to any property” the company has built so far. www.meritcoffee.com


5. Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Five Guys Burgers and Fries is expected to open in Lake Highlands. The restaurant, which will be located at 6451 E. Northwest Hwy., Ste. 100, is slated to open in late September, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. Five Guys serves burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs and fries. The Lake Highlands restaurant will be the company’s second Dallas location. www.fiveguys.com
