San Antonio-based Merit Coffee is planning to open its fifth Dallas cafe in Lakewood in August.

The coffee roasting company has been looking to expand in the Lakewood area for about two years, said Charlie Paulette, vice president of sales and marketing. Merit Coffee looks for expansion opportunities in neighborhoods with active communities and unique personalities, with Paulette citing Lakewood’s outdoor recreational opportunities and community-focused residents as reasons for its selection.

“We’re very careful about where we go because obviously we want to be successful, but we also want to bring something special,” Paulette said.

Each Merit Coffee cafe is designed to fit the personality of its neighborhood, Paulette said. Although he declined to share specific design details about the Lakewood location, he promised it will be “unique to any property” the company has built so far.

Merit Coffee sources fresh coffee from over 30 countries and roasts them with its custom-built German roaster in San Antonio, according to its website. In addition to its cafes, the company sells coffee at Whole Foods and Central Market stores throughout Texas.

“We’re a Texas company, and we want to create the best coffee in the state,” Paulette said.

The company has 12 cafes in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, including ones in Deep Ellum, Preston Forest, Preston Hollow Village and Highland Park. The Lakewood cafe will be located at 4124 Abrams Road, Dallas. www.meritcoffee.com
