Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax will keep his job after Mayor Eric Johnson and certain City Council members called to consider firing him.

Broadnax and Johnson on June 21 shared a joint statement expressing intent on “moving forward together.”

“A little over a week ago, I said that it was time for a change at the top of our city government,” Johnson said in the joint statement. “I still believe we need change. But after some serious and frank discussions with our city manager, I believe he is ready to make the necessary changes to address issues that are critically important to our residents.”

A meeting to either fire or discipline Broadnax was first scheduled for June 15 in a closed session, a city memo stated. However, that meeting was pushed to June 23 after some council members asked for it to be delayed.

The June 23 meeting is now canceled due to Johnson being in isolation for COVID-19, according to the joint statement. City Council can conduct performance reviews in August following a July recess.

The two public officials reached mutual agreement to address a variety of issues in Dallas, according to the statement. They include Broadnax developing a plan to address problems with the city’s building permitting process, improving public safety and focusing on economic development.

In the joint statement, Broadnax said he and his team “can be better.” Broadnax is expected to discuss his plans and additional concerns with council members in the days ahead.

“I understand that I am fully accountable to my 15 bosses,” Broadnax said. “So today, I want to say to the mayor, to the members of the City Council, and to all the residents of this dynamic city: I accept the challenge.”
