The North Tarrant Express highway expansion hit a major milestone in December and is now 25% finished, according to a Dec. 11 news release from TEXpress.

The details

The release states that 22 beams have been placed at the Airport Freeway/Hwy. 820 interchange by the North East Mall, which is one of the biggest operations within the project.

Holiday Lane has been repaved and the deck pour has been added at Rufe Snow Drive, according to the release.

In September, the project was 20% completed, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

The expansion began at the end of 2023 along the SH 121/183 split and Hwy. 820 corridors to add a free general purpose lane in each direction along the North Loop of I-820.

A toll-managed lane in each direction along Airport Freeway will be added to alleviate high volumes of traffic, as well.

What else?

Work on the project will slow down as the holidays approach due to blackout periods (no work allowed) from Dec. 22 through Dec. 27 and again from Dec. 30 through Jan. 2, according to the release.

The project will cost about $414 million and will be fully funded by toll revenues collected from NTE TEXpress Lanes. It is expected to be completed in 2027.
