The expansion project for the North Tarrant Express highway is now 20%, according to a news release.

What’s happening

Beams have been placed at Beach Street and asphalt placed at the SH 121/183 split, the release states. Construction also has begun on I-820 between eastbound Rufe Snow Drive and Iron Horse Boulevard.

New asphalt was placed at the SH 121/183 split in Bedford and Euless heading west, as well.

The backstory

Pre-construction started at the end of 2023 and construction ramped up over the summer to include nightly closings to minimize the impact on daytime traffic.

A free general purpose lane in each direction along the North Loop of I-820 and a toll-managed lane in each direction along Airport Freeway will be added to alleviate high volumes of traffic.

What else?

The project will cost about $414 million and will be fully funded by toll revenues collected from NTE TEXpress Lanes. It is expected to be completed in 2027.

The expansion is part of a public-private agreement between the Texas Department of Transportation and NTE Mobility Partners. As more people move to Texas, the departments agreed that the revamped highway will help traffic congestion in the area.
