The city of Keller unanimously approved a school zone extension near Bear Creek Parkway at a regular board meeting Dec. 16.

The details

Keller officials added a new school zone along Preston Lane from Bear Creek Parkway to Moss Hill Lane, which connects two pre-existing school zones for Hidden Lakes Elementary.

The city received several calls from parents about a gap between the two different school zones, causing confusion for drivers and pedestrians, according to city documents.

Texas Transportation Code requires school zones to have a maximum speed limit of 30 miles per hour. Keller Municipal Code states reduced speeds and the limits of those reductions on public streets related to schools are 20 miles per hour.

Also of note

The city approved a total of $665,000 to go toward sidewalk improvements in 2026.

$350,000 will go toward addressing repairs near Keller Parkway and Bear Creek Parkway. $315,000 is set to go toward larger missing sidewalk connections throughout the city, according to city documents.

Rachel Reynolds, the city’s communication and public engagement manager, said this is the second year of this sidewalk repair program. The city plans to continue through a four-year assessment schedule.

Funding comes from the city’s General Fund and is included in the Street System Capital Improvements Project Fund.

One more thing

The city denied all proposals for the rehabilitation of the Keller Smithfield Elevated Storage tank. The city received one qualified proposal for the project, but it was beyond the estimated project budget, according to city documents.

Reynolds said water tank maintenance typically includes letting the tank drain down so it can be cleaned and repainted. Other towers, like Whitley water tower and Pearson water tower, have already been rehabilitated.

Project bidding will be opened up again in late 2026 after the summer peak water demand has passed. Reynolds said there are not any anticipated negative impacts to the delay.
