The change comes as the federal government recently ruled the 311 number could not be charged for mobile services.
“We are excited to offer another shorter path to call for city services,” said Sharon Gamble, customer service administrator for the City of Fort Worth, in a city news release.
The background
An April 30 staff report detailed a switch to the 311 number was considered by city officials in 2015, but they decided against this as each call would have cost 5 cents, and they chose to remain with the 10-digit number instead.
Residents can use 311 for nonemergency calls as long as they are making the call from a wireless device inside Fort Worth city limits.
Moving forward
Residents can call 311 for concerns that include:
- Reaching animal control
- Reporting potholes or stop light outages
- Nonemergency crime reporting
- Information about permitting and zoning
- Information from the city manager’s office
